STARFest presents Ellen Keith

Originally from St. Albert, Ellen Keith is a recent graduate of the University of British Columbia’s MFA program in creative writing. Her work has appeared in publications such as The New Quarterly and The Globe and Mail and she has received the Anton Fiction Prize and James Patrick Folinsbee Prize in Creative Writing. She spends much of her time travelling but currently resides in Amsterdam.

In her remarkably assured and utterly compelling debut novel, Ellen Keith has written a sweeping story. From the Netherlands to Germany to Argentina, The Dutch Wife braids together the stories of three individuals who share a dark secret and are entangled in two of the most oppressive reigns of terror in modern history. Keith shines a spotlight on two forgotten victims of history—the prostitutes in Nazi labour camps and those who disappeared in Argentina’s terrorism of the 1970s. This is a novel about the blurred lines between love and lust, abuse and resistance, and right and wrong, as well as the capacity for ordinary people to persevere and do the unthinkable in extraordinary circumstances.

Laurel Deedrick-Mayne’s first novel, A Wake for the Dreamland, was on the Edmonton Journal bestseller list for 35 weeks before winning the 2016 Alberta Readers’ Choice Award. It tells the story of three young Edmontonians dealing with the realities and consequences of the Second World War.
