Black Film Watch Parties with the NFB

Join Florence François, Programming Agent for the National Film Board of Canada for three short films that embody their Black Communities in Canada collection. From a brilliantly animated short on Canadian jazz legend Oscar Peterson to revealing the buried history of hockey in Canada, this mini-film fest will be a party you won’t want to miss!

Ice Breakers (15 min)

  • Ice Breakers reveals the buried history of a pioneering Black hockey league in Atlantic Canada, as a young player discovers that his unshakable passion is tied to a rich and remarkable heritage.

Black Soul (9 min)

  • Martine Chartrand’s animated short dives into the heart of Black culture with an exhilarating trip though history. Watch as a young boy traces his roots through the stories his grandmother shares with him about the events that shaped their cultural heritage.

Oscar (12 min)

  • Brilliantly mixing animated sequences and archival footage, Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre paints a touching portrait of virtuoso pianist Oscar Peterson.
